Game journalists have praised the masterpiece that is Alan Wake II. It has a great storyline, art direction, and audio design. The haunting atmosphere is right on point with all of these elements combined, and yet one pesky factor disrupts the player’s immersion: the Epic Games achievement notification.
The Problem
Alan Wake II has received endless high praise from well-established sites. IGN has rated it 9/10, Gamesradar+ gave it a perfect 5 stars, and so on.
The single-player horror adventure completely captures its players with the game’s stunning graphics and immersive sounds. Fans can’t afford to miss a single second.
And so imagine embarking on a high-stakes mission, with the tense music keeping you at the edge of your seat. You’re about to enter a door, with a chance of a jumpscare waiting on the other side, only for a cheerful and perky notification to remind you that you’re just playing a videogame and you’re not some hero or detective.
Here is an example of an achievement notification.
While the sound is chill and friendly, it doesn’t go well with Alan Wake II’s atmosphere.
Alan Wake II was released on Oct. 27, 2023, and players can play it on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The achievement problem only bothers PC gamers as the game is not available on Steam but instead on the Epic Games Store.
There are around 66 achievements in Alan Wake II. Thus, PC players would be hearing the ‘ting‘ a lot. The question now remains if they have the option to remove it.
How to Turn Off the Achievement Notification on Alan Wake II
According to multiple sources, there are many ways to turn the notification off, but Epic Games doesn’t tell players directly.
The first is to press “shift + F3 ” once players open Alan Wake II.
Another is to open the volume mixer on your PC and put the volume down for the notifications.
And the third one would be to play the game offline.
If these methods still don’t work, players must find and kill the EOSOverlayRenderer. Thankfully, Xbob42 from Reddit explained how.
Players must open their Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+ Alt+ Delete. Click Alan Wake II, expand it, and they should be able to see the “EOSOverlay Renderer.” Players could click on it and choose “Open File Location.”
Players can either move, rename, or delete the following files:
- EOSOverlayRenderer-Win32-Shipping.exe
- EOSOverlayRenderer-Win64-Shipping.exe
It’s recommended for players to close the game before doing any of these steps. If there are qualms regarding the deletion of files, players can reinstall the Epic Game Store launcher. Thus, nothing is permanently lost.
Furthermore, gamers have experienced this problem for years now and even found some of the methods mentioned above to be unsuccessful.
Even Alan Wake II fans aren’t safe from these bothersome achievement pings.
