Today marked the 2nd ODI of the 2023 Ireland tour of England but it was actually the first game of the series, because the first one was washed out due to rain. England dished out four ODI debuts today in the form of Sam Hain, Jamie Smith, Tom Hartley and George Scrimshaw; none of their ODI World Cup 2023 squad players featured in the squad for this home series.

One of the debutants did really well with the bat, with Hain scoring 89 in his first ODI match, while Smith scored 9 and Hartley remained unbeaten at the end of England’s 50 overs, with 12*. Scrimshaw on the other hand, had a miserable start to his ODI career, overstepping and conceding a no ball in his first ball of his international career. Then, many more followed in that first over…

George Scrimshaw – 4 no balls in first international over

For those who don’t know, Scrimshaw has been one of the most exciting young prospects in England for quite a few years now. However, he’s entry into the national side was delayed due to persistent injuries. Today however, he made his international debut and while he’s one hell of a talent, the nerves were all on display as he bowled 1, 2, 3, 4 NO BALLS in his first over in international cricket itself.

I have seen one of the most weirdest over of cricket by George Scrimshaw.
It was so weird that at the end Umpire even congratulated him by tapping his shoulder, lol
Never saw that either#ENGvIRE pic.twitter.com/JQFQFZwReH

His first in ODI cricket for England over went for 17 runs thanks to two boundaries hit by the Irish openers as well. And then, Scrimshaw had a horror second over as well, as he went for 18 runs in the next over. Here, he bowled a couple of more no balls, to go with a wide too. However, all’s well that ends well, as he ended the second over with a classic delivery outside off-stump, getting Andrew Balbirnie as his first ODI wicket.

Even when the batter was caught at slip and Scrimshaw got his first wicket, he was trembling and shaking instead of celebrating as the umpire was checking for yet another no ball. However, his teammates surrounded him and gave him the necessary motivation needed, as the delivery was a legal one and he ended with 1/35 after 2 overs. His third over was the best of the lot, going for just one run.

George Scrimshaw conceded 17 runs in his first over in an England shirt.

Not all hope is lost for him. Jimmy Anderson also conceded 17 in his first Test match over…#BBCCricket #skycricket #ENGvIRE pic.twitter.com/igWDJZoqmR

All seemed well after his first international wicket and we’re sure the nerves would’ve calmed down as well. However, he’s going down in history as a bowler who gave away one of the most runs in their first over in international cricket (still checking the statistic here).
