Xtra Time Web Desk: The much-anticipated Indian squad announcement for upcoming Asia Cup 2023 was held in Delhi. Ajit Agarkar led selection committee picked 17-member squad for the tournament set to take place in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. India’s matches are exclusively slated in Sri Lanka. The chief selector and skipper Rohit Sharma fielded inquiries following the announcement. While both offered responses, Rohit’s humorous reaction stood out when queried about batting order flexibility.
Rohit clarified that while batters were encouraged to be adaptable, openers wouldn’t suddenly find themselves batting at number 8. He amusingly quipped, “Ye Pagalpanti Nahi Karte Hum,” implying they don’t indulge in such absurdities.
Before heading to Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup, the Indian team will convene in Bengaluru for a camp. The tournament kicks off on August 30, featuring India-Pakistan clashes, with India launching their journey against Pakistan on September 2 at the Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium. Potentially, two to three IND vs PAK matches might unfold in this edition of the Asia Cup.
If India and Pakistan progress to the Super Fours stage, they’re set to face off in Colombo on September 10. In case both teams secure final berths, the championship clash is scheduled for September 17 at the same venue. The ODI World Cup 2023 is slated to transpire from October 5 to November 19.
Rohit Sharma also cleared the air about the number 4 batting position in the team. Rohit said the discussions around one particular position should stop as every position is key and no single position can ensure victories or defeats in matches.
“It is not about just one position…all positions are important. We have had injuries along the lines and that is the reason we needed to manage that load. We need to figure out what combination suits us. Want to give all players a chance,”
